Lead Registered Nurse (RN)

SUMMARY:

The Lead RN serves as a hands-on care provider and supervisor for the Medical Assistants (MAs), combining the advanced scope of RN practice with practical, patient-facing responsibilities in a collaborative outpatient clinical setting. This position ensures high-quality patient care by supporting providers, overseeing MA workflows, and maintaining compliance with organizational policies and regulatory standards. The Lead RN serves as the primary resource for MA processes, infection control, patient safety, and team development.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Verify and document patient intake, including vital signs, medical history, current medications, chief complaint, problem list, immunization record, and other relevant information.
  • Administer vaccines and medications to patients of all ages as ordered, documenting time, dose, and route in the patient record.
  • Perform venipuncture, collect POC tests and swabs, and ensure proper labeling, preparation, and handling of specimens.
  • Assist providers with patient examinations and minor procedures, such as wound care, dressing changes, and visual/hearing screens.
  • Operate, maintain, and assemble medical equipment (e.g., EKG, Spirometer, oxygen supply equipment, otoscopes, sphygmomanometers, sterilizers, etc.).
  • Demonstrate effective patient communication skills and the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and developmental level of the patient.
  • Conduct lab result callbacks and patient follow-up as directed by the provider.
  • Demonstrate through understanding of all applicable legal concepts affecting patient care.
  • Ensure exam rooms/equipment are properly cleaned between patients, and practice proper infection control before, during, and after all patient visits.
  • Display exceptional communication skills between your team, support staff, and administration.

Infection Control & Safety

  • Serve as the lead for the Infection Control initiative and committee, ensuring compliance with protocols before, during, and after patient care.
  • Oversee proper cleaning and sterilization of equipment and exam rooms between patients.
  • Maintain and monitor inventory of medical supplies and PPE; coordinate restocking.

Leadership & Supervision

  • Supervise and mentor Medical Assistants, ensuring productivity, adherence to protocols, and quality patient care.
  • Participate in or lead team initiatives, serve as a preceptor to students or new employees, and contribute to process improvement efforts.

Administrative & Compliance

  • Review MS documentation for accuracy and completeness in the EHR.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Collaborate effectively with providers, leadership, and other team members to ensure coordinated patient care.
  • Adapt to changing work responsibilities, policies, and organizational needs.

Other Duties

  • Participate in organization-wide initiatives as assigned.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership.

Typical Week for the Lead RN:

Every day:

  • Lead morning huddle with the MAs.
  • Ideally the RN is wound care certified so they may provide wound care to any pt in need of this service, no matter which medical provider’s schedule the pt is on.

4 days per week:

  • Tethered to a provider, performing the typical functions of a Medical Assistant.

1 day per week: Admin functions.

  • Review exam/procedure room inventories completed by MAs.
  • Reconcile master medical inventory and create purchase requests for any supplies needed.
  • Review MA chart notes from the current week for completion and accuracy. Request corrections as needed.
  • Complete MA competencies/training as needed.

FLSA CLASSIFICATION:  Non-Exempt

DESIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active Texas RN license in good standing with the Board of Nursing.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Wound Care Certification Preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact compassionately with patients of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in EHR systems and basic computer applications. Cerner EHR experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to mentor team members.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in procedures, technology, and regulations.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
