POSITION DESCRIPTION: Medical Laboratory Technician
The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for managing the daily operations of the clinic’s laboratory, ensuring accurate and timely test results while upholding health and safety regulations. This role includes supervising laboratory staff, developing and implementing policies and procedures, and collaborating with healthcare professionals and external laboratory testing sites to deliver high-quality patient care.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervisor: Lead and manage laboratory staff, including hiring, training, redirection and conducting performance evaluations to ensure effective team development.
- Vaccine Coordinator: Responsible for overseeing the planning, implementation, and management of vaccine distribution in alignment with local/state health guidelines. Communicate with external vaccine programs to ensure effective collaboration. Ensure compliance with health regulations while promoting vaccination efforts within the community. Coordinate logistics for vaccine distribution and storage. Work closely with healthcare providers and public health officials. Maintain accurate, confidential records of administered vaccinations in accordance with health regulations. Analyze vaccination data to assess program effectiveness and identify areas for improvement. Provide training and resources for staff involved in vaccine administration. Serve as the primary point of contact for questions related to vaccination protocols and procedures and meet with vaccination representatives as needed. Prepare monthly reports, place orders for new stock, and monitor vaccine inventory, supply levels, and storage temperatures. Ensure proper function of temperature data loggers and monitor their expiration dates.
- Phlebotomy: Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures, ensuring patient safety and comfort during blood collection. Educate patients about the process, prepare and maintain equipment, label specimens accurately, and ensure proper handling and documentation. Adhere to safety and infection control protocols.
- Quality Control: Ensure adherence to regulatory CLIA/AAAHC standards and implement quality control procedures to guarantee the accuracy and reliability of test results.
- Operational Management: Oversee laboratory operations, including specimen processing, test execution, and result reporting to ensure timely and accurate outcomes.
- Collaboration: Work closely with physicians, healthcare staff, and external testing sites to review lab results and provide insights on testing processes.
- Budget Management: Support laboratory budget management, focusing on resource allocation, inventory management, and cost control.
- Equipment Maintenance: Ensure laboratory equipment is well-maintained, calibrated, and operates according to required standards.
- Policy Development: Develop, update, and implement laboratory policies and procedures to improve workflow efficiency and ensure safety.
- Education and Training: Offer continuous training and development opportunities for laboratory staff to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Sample Collection and Preparation: Collect blood and urine specimens, ensuring proper technique, patient identification, and accurate documentation. Coordinate the ordering and preparation of specialized tests on other bodily fluids or tissue samples, ensuring correct handling and packaging for transport to external labs.
- Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyze test results, communicate findings to providers, and maintain accurate records of tests performed and results obtained.
- Infection Control: Follow safety protocols to maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, state regulations, and laboratory policies.

Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in healthcare field or higher preferred
- Medical laboratory experience required
- Phlebotomy (CPT) Certification preferred
- Have at least 1 of the following certifications:
- Medical Laboratory Technician Certification (MLT)
- American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certification
- American Medical Technologists (AMT) Certification
Conditions of Employment:
- US citizenship is required.
- Incumbents of this position will be subject to a background investigation commensurate with the risk and sensitivity level of the position.
- Successful completion of drug screening required.
